Junction Rivers, a proposed 600MW wind and 200MW/800MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in New South Wales (NSW), is one of only a few renewable energy projects selected nationwide. It is the sole project within the NSW South West Renewable Energy Zone (SW REZ) to achieve this recognition.

Windlab Chief Executive Officer John Martin acknowledged the milestone stating, “This achievement is a powerful endorsement of Junction River’s robust design, significant potential within a highly competitive market, and is a clear demonstration of the government’s confidence in our ability to deliver.
“Junction Rivers is set to generate enough low-cost, clean energy to power approximately 434,000 NSW homes annually, while also displacing over 2 million tonnes of carbon each year from the state’s generation profile.”

Australia’s energy sector is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, with electricity generation in NSW alone accounting for almost 40 per cent of the state’s total carbon emissions – more than 43 million tonnes of CO2 every year.

“Beyond environmental benefits, the project will support up to 600 jobs during construction and inject nearly $1.4 billion into the regional economy, creating significant opportunities for host communities and First Nations Australians.
“The project’s selection is an exciting step forward for Windlab and Junction Rivers as we continue to lead the way in delivering innovative renewable energy solutions."

Junction Rivers’ balanced design is the result of over two years of comprehensive ecological impact studies, technical work, and extensive engagement with local communities, including Traditional Owners and landholders, to ensure enduring benefits that matter.

Construction will commence once all regulatory approvals and access rights are achieved. The project’s detailed Environmental Impact Statement was submitted in July 2024, which is currently under assessment by the state and federal governments under the bilaterial agreement.
