South Africa

SAwindSAwindThere are currently no large scale wind farms operational in South Africa, however there exists considerable wind energy resources in the country that could become a major source of electricity, employment and investment in the near future.

South Africa has an energy intensive economy, largely reliant on coal-fired power stations. Power is supplied by the electricity public utility monopoly Eskom, one of the biggest utilities in the world in terms of generation capacity (approximately 37GW). It is estimated that South Africa will require an addition 40GW of power by 2025.

The Renewable Energy Feed In Tariff (REFIT) has attracted local and overseas companies to invest in the development of wind energy projects, with thousands of mega-watts of wind energy projects proposed.

Windlab's WindScapeTM technology has a strong advantage in South Africa and provides Windlab and our partners with a great opportunity to enhance our portfolio of premium wind projects.

Since 2007, Windlab has been developing a portfolio of South African wind farm sites in partnership with Investec in addition to our own wind farm portfolio with a combined potential capacity in excess of 2,000MW.

Projects are developing rapidly with the primary sites progressing through the feasibility phases of wind monitoring, environmental impact assessment and grid connection studies.

We continue to identify and explore the potential of the region, with current focus moving through the Western Cape, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.
