Wind energy is a very rapidly growing industry in Canada. The installed capacity has increased four-fold in the last five years to almost 2.4 GW. Growth in the industry will continue: the Canadian Wind Energy Association has outlined a strategy to increase the penetration of wind energy from 1% to 20% of total generation by 2025. This will create over 50 000 jobs. Additionally, 9 provinces within Canada have renewable energy targets.
Windlab is presently working in central Alberta on a number of projects totaling a possibility of over a 1000 MW. Projects are progressing with development and wind studies, including environmental assessment and grid interconnection work. Specific project details will be released as progress is made in early stage development work and site securement is obtained.
There are also a number of projects in development in British Columbia:
These projects are progressing rapidly. Wind monitoring has already begun on Otter Lake, whose early results are very promising. Monitoring on the other sites are expected to begin shortly.
